July 04 CANADA DAY ROAD CRITERIUM, 1st place. This past Wednesday Canada celebrated Canada Day, July 1st. Part of the celebrations in Edmonton is the Canada Day criterium race down town Edmonton. It is a well attended race for racers, and spectators coming out to watch the racing. The race is in points race format with points every 4 laps on the line, 5-3-2-1 point up for grabs. 3 years ago I was able to win the race by lapping the field in attendance of my parents who came out and watched the race and festivities. Last year I helped Marc win the race and I finished 2nd so it is definitely a race that suits me and suits a MTB racer. Big part is riding smart, positioning well and having the snap for a spring every 4 laps on this hilly course. Something you learn over the years of racing. It is my 19th race season, so lots of experience doing something like this. I won the race almost taking the maximum amount of points possible. One points sprint I did not participate in, since I was loading up for the last 7 laps of the race, the finale. In that finale we got away with 5 riders and during the last lap I accelerated and managed to cross the finish line first. Also a good race done by Justin Middleton after a little mid season break being in the mix a few times for the points. After the race awards and next a good night spend @ Da Capo spending all my prize money on pizza, gelato and beer in good company, @ 11pm fireworks, good stuff for 20 minutes in duration, a little sad too, once you know what else can be done with the money spend on a fireworks like that. Well I was happy I had another good criterium race, first one for me of this season, criterium races seem to suit me very well, something I have grown up with back in Holland probably racing like 20 of them per race season and being twice the duration, 2 hrs vs. 1 hr over here. I am not sure what my next race is going to be, we'll take it as things come, I love to ride my bike every day anyways.
June 29 Suffer Solstice- Alberta Cup-This week was a tough one since I was not sure if I was going to race or not after the peaking period of Canada Cups the past period. First I was planning on doing the road race this Sunday but full entry was charged ($85), so I decided to head down with the boys to Bragg Creek and Canmore for the weekend and get some epic MTB riding and racing in the Rocky Mountains. We left Saturday morning and on our way we witnessed a nasty accident where a lady run a STOP sign and hit the car right in front of us @ full speed, the car in front of us was going about 80 km/ hr and the lady most likely too. We stopped, got out and in a short time there were a lot of people present to help. Peter called 911 but the line was busy (!). I managed to get the grill of the car from the road and some other stuff to prevent other cars passing cutting up their tires. We continued our trip to Bragg Creek and seemed I forgot the quick release from my back wheel on the curb of our building in Edmonton! With the new Trek you have to take out the QR to take out the wheel and somehow was left behind in Edmonton. I talked to some people there that were owning a TREK and could save my epic pre- ride BUT they were not willing to do so. I offered to get it back to them the next day...must have been my accent or something since they probably did not trust me or something. I was able to get one in Canmore. When I called Rebound Cycle in Canmore I had Ryan Draper on the phone who asked me: "Is this Tim Heemskerk?!?!" Wow....I feel a little famous in Canmore now...small cycling world it is really. The QR worked so I went out for a pre- ride in Canmore which is awesome as well. Unfortunately it was a long day for me so I did one lap on the Iron Lung course which I won a few weeks ago. The descends were most sketchy than a few weeks ago....seems there was a running race on the course! We had a good night at family Knights place in Canmore (3rd time in 4 weeks). Next day race day....1040am start...WHAT!? That early!? OK. I needed coffee so we headed out to my favourite coffee place Communitea in Canmore but it was 830 am and they were still closed, so we had to look for something else and headed to a different coffee place and almost got hit by a guy trying to run a red light..BAD DRIVERS! Back to the race. We had to do 3 big laps and 1 prologue lap which we took easy. On the first big lap and got away on the long climb and had a nice gap on Roddi in 2nd when my contact came out, I slammed my brakes and luckily it was sitting on the inside of my sun glasses. Take your time and make sure it gets in properly is what I thought so I tried and was not easy in the wind. I managed to do so and continued and by the time I was down the descend Roddi closed the gap and we were heading into lap #2, with Blenner sitting in 3rd position. In lap 2 and 3 I opened up a nice gap and the legs were feeling really good up the climbs, down the descends I rode safely. Nice race, thanks Deadgoat CC, all volunteers, road marshals, and good workout. Awards, cheque of $60 (ABA Rules?? w/ entry fee of $50), well I had a good time, nothing I can do about that, and heading back home. Near Bragg Creek we here a BOINK in the car and it seemed that a driver behind us hit Peters bike on the bike rack, no damage done and more prove of bad car drivers in Alberta..crazy! I drove Highway 2 and we made it home safely!! Debby found my QR outside the building..NICE! I also finally saw the movie FUBAR this weekend, Peter showed it to us in Canmore. Not sure what to think of it...well it teaches you NOT to dive in shallow water and to fight CANCER which are good life lessons!! So lots happened for sure and I might have forgotten a thing or 2, we all gained a few more life experiences! June 22 Canmore Canada Cup UCI 1, 4th place in classy field! This past Saturday the Canmore Canada Cup was held, and the start field was going to be top notch for a Canada Cup. This was the period I worked for and the Edmonton CC (3rd) showed fitness was good for another close finish which happened with a 4th place in Canmore behind Kabush, Zandstra and Watson. I had a sprint finish with Matt Hadley for 4th place. My start was horrible since I was unable to click into my road pedals and ended up in the back of the field, once clicked in I hammered towards the front and had a few good moves past people and regained 3rd position midway the first climb. Watson came by just before the first descent and I was sitting well in 4th, just behind Kabush for the long descent. I was following the lines well and halfway the descent we were off the front with 4 people, nice, that until we had a few steeper, more loose sections and I was riding too safe on those sections loosing a few meters every time we hit such a section. Passing through start and finish I was by myself in 4th position only 20 seconds down to the lead group of 3. Unfortunately I was unable to close that completely on the 2nd long climb and was unable to follow the lines set out by the 3 riders in front of me which meant I was going to loose more terrain on the next descent. Matt Hadley and Batty got me in that 2nd descent and from there I dediced to ride my own race and try and go for 4th position. A few more people got back on and in the last lap Matt and me were going to sprint for 4th place. I had the better sprint and finished 4th, you know it! Yeah climbing went well but touching brakes in the descents meant loosing time for this Dutchie. My technical riding was pretty good, and I started clearing stuff well by the 4th lap, but it always takes me a few laps to start taking more speed on the technical sections and daring to take more risks. I am always a very safe rider in that way maybe because I did not grow up racing MTB and did not grow up with the mountains, so I take it :) It was another great weekend in Canmore and I am going to miss racing in Canmore a lot. Last year I was so fortunate to have a no chain feeling and was on top form while racing the Canmore CC resulting in winning this Canada Cup, and the Iron Lung Alberta Cup has always treated me very well too: Canmore is a place to my heart. We spend the weekend in great company with the Hardcore boys and family Knight, and 4 dogs!! Great people, all down- to- earth, good laughs, awesome views, good conversations, great support, good coffee stops @ Communitea with the boys, and for me a place to get relaxed and focused for the races to come, since it is nice and quite, a huge factor to my "successes" in Canmore the past few years. Thanks family Knight for having me and my family! Here's some pictures from another weekend and another great experience in my life!!
June 13 Edmonton Canada Cup- UCI 2-Today the Canada Cup in hometown Edmonton. A race I prepared for the past period. It was only my 3rd MTB race of the season so I was not sure what my level was going to be against Canada's best. First back to yesterday when I discovered a bearing broke in my linkage and my rear triangle had a lot of play, so I decided to be at the race course early and had the Trek factory mechanic look at it. Dex was able to get the bike fixed, thanks Dex and Clayton, you guys saved me today!! The start went well and I was able to move from seconds row into the lead right from the gun. As a "local rider" I do know most of these trails and that off course helps quite a bit. During the first lap we had like 6 guys in front and I kept driving the pace for almost the entire lap. In lap #2 Matt Hadley and me were a bit off the front from Eric Batty and Fillion and the gap was about the same all the time. In lap #3 the gap got a little bigger and things looked like Matt and me were going to battle for the win. On lap #4 disaster for me...I lost my bottle right after I got a new one, that meant a complete lap without a bottle in 28 degrees Celcius...no good, as my legs started to notice that half way into this lap. Matt was driving it and I had to let a little gap go to not start cramping my quads. By the end of this lap Andrew Watson impressively came from the back and passed me, he was going and looking very strong, and I knew he was going hard to beat if he kept riding that pace. I settled for 3rd, grapped my bottle w/ Cola and felt my legs coming back to me with more power. I kept the pace steady and prevented cramping and finished 3rd....I take that result considering. That 4th lap when I got dehydrated I was really luck too since I had 2 close encounters with trees, one on my left shoulder and one on my right shoulder and they are really scraped up, that's riding on the edge while being a little dehydrated. Congrats to Andrew and Matt for a strong race and good job Mike, Evan and Kirk for putting on a great event, hopefully an event that will return to Champion City on an annual basis. Hopefully some nice pictures coming soon. Check out www.pedalmag.com or www.canadiancyclist.ca for full results and pictures! Also thanks to United Cycle, event and personal sponsor!! June 08 IRON LUNG in CANMOREThis weekend we raced the Alberta Cup in Canmore called Iron Lung. It is a technical loop with steep descending and lots of single track and a steep climb called Georgetown which is also part of the Canada Cup course. The Alberta Cup has less climbing compared to the CC but is more technical riding and more single track riding. We stayed @ family Knights place, a beautiful place to be, relaxing, and good times as usual with the elite racers from Hardcore and Peter's dad Brian Knight, thanks for having me again! I was a little under the weather after traveling with Lukasz (and a tiring training week) who was under the weather as well, seems to be going around. The weather did not look to good with cold temperatures and flurries at times, but the course was pretty dry. Over 150 racers showed up for the day and the Elite field was the biggest I have seen in an Alberta Cup. I got a gap on Roddi, Bunnin and Andrew on lap #1, after climbing Georgetown, and won the race over 5 laps just under 2 hrs of racing with Roddi in 2nd and TTP- member and upcoming man Andrew Thomas in 3rd. Thanks Marc Bailey for willing to feed us, next time Deb will be there and she will take care of you again, just like the Perogy race when she was feeding 9 United Cycle racers(!!!!). The colder temperatures and flurries on lap 3 made my legs feel like rocks but fortunately the flurries stopped accompanied with that more leg power. Next meeting Edmonton CC followed by the Canmore CC. Thanks to Ed and co for another epic event.June 01 Giro d'Italia last stage- ITT- what a tension and emotions!Check out this video of the Rabobank teammates in the team bus watching Menchov defend his 20 sec advantage over Di Luca during the final ITT in Rome, in the rain. What a tension and emotions! Great job Denis (and team) and great job mechanic who was there with a spare bike within seconds and pushing him back to speed in no time!! Awesome. Pigeon Lake Road Race....broken frame.Today in super nice weather conditions was the Pigeon Lake RR on a new course. It was a bit windy which makes things interesting over here. Things went fine and a little group of 4 got away, not real danger since it was windy and with only 4 guys was going to be hard. Next we're on a fast road going down the hill when someone in the front crashed and took half the peloton out except for a few riders in the very front part of the bunch and some people sitting in the 2nd half. I was on the right side of the road and got tangled into a crashing bike in front of me and aiming for a softer landing in the ditch (grass and gravel) was about to make it when I was taken out from behind by another crashing rider. It all happened at a speed of about 55 km/ hr. Lots of people down and a few in serious conditions. I got up checked the scene, lots of people present to assist and continued on a cracked bike which I only noticed after the finish line. 6 guys managed to get away after the crash and bridged up to the already leading 4 guys, making it 10. My battle was to try and make it back to the remaining peloton and I managed to bridge up. Unfortunately the race was pretty much over with most teams having one or more riders in the front. Gap got 2 min in no time. Remaining was a nice training ride for me to try and get to the finish line in a descent pace and workout! Anthony worked hard, and Jeff and Justin gave me a few hands and heading into the last 10 km's the gap to the lead group of 10 was reduced from 2 min to like 30- 45 seconds, too bad there wasn't another strong guy without someone in the lead group willing to assist, although I did not really wanted things to come back together with so many team mates of the leaders sitting in the draft playing their team tactics. I did get the workout I wanted and was happy I got away without much bodily injuries after hitting the ditch and not the hard pavement. The crash was bad and a few guys really did get hurt today, 4 or 5 people were taken to hospital and one person looked bad once we passed the scene one lap later. The road was almost closed off with quite a few police cars and ambulances present. I do hope everyone is going to be riding their bikes soon and will get healthy soon. May 26 GOOD NEWS FOR A COFFEE LOVER LIKE ME :)Hopefully this will also translate to increased sports performance, No Pain No Gain?? IJSNEM, 19(2), April 2009, Copyright © 2009 Effect of Caffeine on Quadriceps Muscle Pain During Acute Cycling Exercise in Low Versus High Caffeine Consumers Rachael C. Gliottoni, John R. Meyers, Sigurbjörn Á. Arngrímsson, Steven P. Broglio, Robert W. Motl Full Article Table of Contents for Vol. 19, Iss. 2 Abstract This experiment examined the effect of a moderate dose of caffeine on quadriceps muscle pain during a bout of high-intensity cycling in low- versus high-caffeine-consuming males. College-age men who were low (≤100 mg/day; n = 12) or high (≥400 mg/day; n = 13) habitual caffeine consumers ingested caffeine (5 mg/kg body weight) or a placebo in a counterbalanced order and 1 hr later completed 30 min of cycle ergometry at 75–77% of peak oxygen consumption. Perceptions of quadriceps muscle pain, as well as oxygen consumption, heart rate, and work rate, were recorded during both bouts of exercise. Caffeine ingestion resulted in a statistically significant and moderate reduction in quadriceps muscle-pain-intensity ratings during the 30-min bout of high-intensity cycle ergometry compared with placebo ingestion in both low (d = −0.42) and high (d = −0.55) caffeine consumers. The results suggest that caffeine ingestion is associated with a moderate hypoalgesic effect during high-intensity cycling in college-age men who are low or high habitual caffeine consumers, but future work should consider better defining and differentiating pain and effort when examining the effects of caffeine during acute exercise. May 25 PEROGY MTB RACE.Yesterday I raced my first MTB race of the season and the weather was nice and the course too, as usual. I love Terwillegar Park for MTB training and racing, best trails in town! First lap was great and no traffic, nice to hit the descents full speed and corner hard, lap 2- 5 not so good....lots of traffic and a little annoying at times for me but also for the rider in front of me, since the person has to find a spot to let me go by. I must have passed 40 people from other categories in those 4 laps. My last lap...awesome again since ELITE is the only category doing 6 laps and traffic was way less making it possible to hit the descends at race pace again. I won the race, winning my 2nd race of this year 2009. It was a good workout and hopefully will set me up nicely for the weeks to come. Now with the intervals starting the past few weeks for me and most of my TTP- members building towards a peaking period in the upcoming period. It is now that all the past work and building of a house is getting a nice roof on top of it. How high the roof is going to be depends on these weeks of training with specific intervals. Good to see other TTP members riding so well too with Antonio and Matt podium in their categories. I told Matt some time ago he should be Expert, but last week he had to race Novice Men and crushed the field. Good to see he did get the upgrade to Expert this weekend and finishing 2nd straightaway. Too bad Trevor cramped up since he was racing for a podium spot as well, we need to figure that out this week. OK. I have to get back to work and make new programs for the boys for the upcoming week!
Good race put on by the boys from Alberta MTB Racing.
May 11 VELOCITY ROAD RACE, 140 km's.This weekend I rode my first race of the season (already). Finally got my new road bike this week and was able to ride it for 2 training rides to get used to it. It rides nice but need to get more comfortable on it. The Velocity RR was a nice race to start the season with. Start of this season has been a little slower than usual since I was still racing cyclo cross back in January in Europe. In the meanwhile I haven't done much hard training except for the group rides on the weekends. It also seemed to last forever for the snow to disappear this winter. No training camps or traveling to the sun for me since I came back to Edmonton. OK. back to the race, weather conditions were nice, the field was pretty big and with the wind made it interesting for sure. I felt OK and went to the front on the crosswind sections. Just past half way the race the peloton split and we were off the front with 9 or 10 people. I felt pretty good until we hit the last lap of about 23 km's. The distance was a bit too long for me so early in the season to compete for the win. 120 km's no problem, 140 km's was a bit of a problem and my legs did not feel good anymore. With about 20 km's to go Paul T (strongest guy in the race) attacked, split the lead group, and 5 people got away and we were left behind with 4 of us, just behind the 5. Another rider got dropped and I think they sprinted with 3 or 4 for the win, with Bunnin winning the race, Trevor 2nd and Nick in 3rd I think. I finished 6th and was happy with how I rode this race. This will definitely improve early season fitness in the next few weeks. April 02 TTP- member Andrew Thomas post Worlds interview."Biggest race by title"...haha....I like that! Now where's the right glasses?

Sat 06/20 Canmore Canada Cup XC MTB RMCC Mountain Bike Canmore March 13 Workout of the Week: BOSU Leg Raises. The BOSU Leg Raises target your buttocks/ Glutes and lower back. Doing this exercise while balancing on a Bosu takes it to the next level, since you will also be strengthening your core muscles: obliques and abdominals. 1. Place a Bosu on the floor, with the soft side (dome) down.
2. Contract the abdominal muscles and, keeping the body in a straight line, raise your extended leg up in the air, as shown on the picture above. 3. Return the right foot to the floor and repeat with the left leg. 4. Go back and forth for eight to 12 repetitions. 5. Now for a more advanced exercise you do the same exercise except you place your lower arms and elbows on the BOSU, see picture below! Place your lower arms and elbows on the BOSU and get into sort of a time trailing position, and repeat the exercise while being in this position. This exercise comes closer to time trailing and will benefit the people out there being in this position quite often: for example: Triathletes!
Good Luck and more importantly HAVE FUN, working out on a BOSU is so much fun! It is very functional and doing these exercises not only helps you on the bike, but also in everyday life! -Tim. www.timheemskerk.com February 25 Workout of this Week- BOSU FROGS-The BOSU FROGS target your hips, buttocks and inner-thigh muscles. Doing this exercise while balancing on a Bosu takes it to the next level, since you will also be strengthening your core muscles. 1. Place a Bosu on the floor, with the soft side (dome) down.
2. Contract the abdominal muscles and, keeping the body in a straight line, bring your right knee up to your right armpit with the leg turned out. The leg is rotated out and comes up more to the side. Do not let the body twist and do not lift the hips.
3. Return the right foot to the floor and repeat with the left leg. 4. Go back and forth for eight to 12 repetitions. Now I do have a more complicated and more cycling specific variation to this BOSU exercise (above). Drop me a line. -Tim. February 20 Back Home (in the Arctic).I am back in Edmonton for a few weeks now and it is pretty good to get back into my old rhythm. I do miss the riding on dirt instead of snow and ice in the middle of winter time. My trip in Europe ended with Dutch Nationals where I was able to finish 9th, and I was content with that placing. A week later I raced the Super Prestige in Surhuisterveen and finished 20th showing I was adapting to racing cross bikes in Europe but it takes more time and a different seasonal approach to be more competitive. The project Canada House in Holland went well and I am proud to have this one pulled off together with Maarten and their team. I do hope Canada will support this project so in a few years from now they will have some Canadian contenders for the top rankings. Unfortunately when I came back to Canada the cross calendar was already filled up entirely. That sucked for me since (as most of you guys know) the proceedings from organizing this cross race paid for the rent of Canada House in Holland and unfortunately I did not get an email or similar informing me of a deadline or asking if I was willing to REPEAT GP Champion City, too bad! GP Champion City was the first cross race with a Kids Race, and all proceedings went to Kids w/ Cancer. Hopefully another organizer is willing and going to repeat something similar! Seeing all the smiles on the little kids faces before, during and after the race was something I won't forget soon. It totally made all our energy and efforts in organizing the other races that day worth while. OK, I am back from Europe and the trip was nice. Some things in Europe I would have liked to have gone differently but they were out of my control. I am back in training for another season of racing and I have set some nice goals until the summer. I am also looking forward to the racing of all my TTP members. It is going to be an interesting year. Everyone is building up towards their goals and it is always nice to see how much progress each of them is making!
January 08 Racing Cross in Europe! It has been some time ago that I updated my weblog so time for a new update. I do send out regular racing updates through the Facebook group--> Canada House in Holland. I left the last week of November to Holland to race cross in Belgium- Holland and Germany and will do another 4 races in the next few weeks.
As soon as I arrived I had to get my equipment ready and that took a few weeks and was pretty stressful to me. In the meanwhile I raced Super Prestige in Gieten (25th), Frankfurter Rad Cross (17th), Essen (25th) and Overijse (dnf), a local race in Hoogwolde (1st), Diegem (DNF- crash), Middelkerke (24th), Loenhout (48th) and St. Michielsgestel (33rd being sick) and these results are OK but not to my potential. All races have their own story and some are very frustrating. It has all been a very good experience though something me and my athletes will learn from. I have not been lapped in any of these races either :) This week I am fighting off illness and that means easy workouts and more rest and hopefully I will shake it off to finish the last 4 races off with a blast to my potential. I do know it takes a different approach of the summer season to do better with a more specific European cross approach, not sure I do want to try that or not.
The boys have been learning a lot and had a few DNF's, unfortunately, but it has been good preparation towards Worlds and a good learning curve and eye opener for sure what racing cross over here is like and what responsibilities you do have racing for and as a team! Next to my racing I spend quite some time and energy trying to run this smoothly for them together with Maarten and off course the team sponsors. I do think they are very fortunate with what they have been presented so far by the team Jan Terpstra and TTP (Tim's Training Programs). It has been worth all the time and energy and organizing a cross race, GP Champion City with my wife Debby and Lukasz Jedras, to create a small budget for it as well. My lifestyle has become Canadian and the fast lifestyle over here does not really appeal to me. It is busy and people are way too busy with stuff. I do think people here are way better organized in things and they have to if they want to be able to do all those things.
OK. 4 more races to come before Brian and Andrew race Worlds in Hoogerheide, not sure if I can be there since my Visum is expiring just before Worlds.
I will race Dutch Nationals this Sunday, Surhuisterveen Super Prestige next Wednesday, Valkenswaard Eurocross and Zonnebeke UCI 2 race in Belgium and next I am finally done for this season!! I will head back to Canada with a very good fitness for the time of the year and hopefully will benefit from that this upcoming summer.
Stay tuned,
-Tim.
